Despite living on his own for some time now, Kiku had never really learned how to cook. He lived mostly off cheap ramen and other pre-made stuff. This was no exception. He got home from the store, making sure to shut and lock the door behind him. In spite of his abilities, Kiku still worried about break-ins. He brought the little box he had bought to the table and set it down, going to look for candles.

It took a few minutes to scrounge up enough, but sure enough he had them. There were still plenty of extra from last year. He opened up the box and arranged the candles on the little cake he had bought. It was a bit of a tight fit, but it worked. Then it dawned on him: he'd forgotten to get matches. He knew he was out, and he really didn't feel like waiting to get more. He'd have to improvise.

Kiku focused, cobbling together some fire chakra. He'd only need a little, he didn't feel like setting his apartment on fire right now. Or ever, for that matter. He snapped his fingers, and a spark rose from his thumb. It was a start. Another snap, and a little flame rose up for a second before sputtering out. The third time was the charm. With the third snap, a candle-like flame appeared at the tip of his thumb, and stayed there. He lit the candles with his thumb, then blew out the fire on his fingertip. Kiku sat down, and blew out the fifteen candles.

“Happy birthday to me.”
